George Leier, Jr.

George Leier, Jr died peacefully surrounded by his family in Transitions Hospice House on February 26th in Raleigh, NC at the age of 85. George is survived by his beautiful bride, Dorothy, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage, his daughter Margaret Leier of Raleigh, NC, his daughter Karen Kuhns, son-in-law Tim Kuhns, grandchildren, James and Jeffrey Kuhns of Apex, NC, his son George Leier and daughter in-law Vickie Leier of Elkton MD, his grandson Christopher Leier of Silver Spring, MD, his granddaughter Katina Leier of Burlington, VT, his grandson Justin Riddle and wife, Sweet Joy Riddle and great granddaughter Jazmine Belle Riddle of Wilmington, DE, and his granddaughter Kaleigh Riddle of Houston, TX. He is preceded in death by his parents, George and May, his brother William Norman and his sisters Martha and Ruth Ann. George was born at home in the Bronx, NY to George and May Leier on June 17th 1930. Growing up he worked for years in his father’s plumbing business before moving on to work at Hertlein Tool and Die. In 1956, he began a long and distinguished career at IBM where he worked as both a Hardware and Software engineer, retiring as an employee in 1987 and again as a consultant in 2000.George was a longtime member of Wakefield Grace Methodist Church in the Bronx. He became an Episcopalian when he was married to his loving wife, Dorothy in 1957 and was a longtime member of St John’s Episcopal Church in Larchmont, NY and then Church of the Good Shepherd in Raleigh NC.George was a Mason and longtime member of John Stewart Lodge in Mount Vernon, NY. George raised his family in Rye, NY where he helped with community organizations such as the Boy and Girl Scouts and was a member of Rye Fire Department’s Milton patrol. He continued his community service in Raleigh driving kidney dialysis patients to treatment and supporting World Vision and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital throughout his adult life. George shared his zest for living and joyful outlook on life with a wonderful sense of humor and contagious optimism. He was an avid puzzle solver and fan of Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. He was always willing to help others often using his uncanny ability to fix anything to rescue those in need. George was a truly kind and compassionate man who loved well and genuinely fostered that which was good and decent. .
